Maybe I Really Am a Wedding Doula...
This couple began working with me 15 months ago. What started as a six-month program continued all the way through their engagement.
I never expected that they would invite me to their wedding.

But on Saturday, I sat and watched them lock eyes as the ceremony began. Their faces were filled with excitement, love, anticipation, and tears of joy. I watched them exchange their vows, hold each other during their first dance, enjoy their meal, and move through the room greeting the people who had come to celebrate them.
If something went wrong, I could not tell you what it was.
They laughed. They danced. They were present with their guests and, most importantly, with each other.
People have told me before that I am like a doula for weddings. I understood the comparison, but this was the first time I could fully see it.
A doula supports someone as they prepare to bring their baby into the world. While so much attention is focused on the baby, the doula focuses on the mother, helping her feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout the experience.
Maybe that is what I do for weddings. While so much attention is placed on bringing the wedding day to life, I focus on caring for the bride or couple preparing to live it.
While the wedding industry is working to bring the day to life, I am supporting the bride or couple as they take care of themselves through the process.
Sometimes that support sounds simple: Do not skip meals. Drink enough water. Plan your week. Find time to move your body.
But when your schedule is packed with decisions and your brain is trying to keep track of a hundred details, those simple things can quickly become the hardest to maintain. Decision fatigue sets in, and taking care of yourself gets pushed further down the list.
Every bride and couple is different. What they want to address, what they are balancing, and where they need support can change throughout the engagement.
For 15 months, this couple and I had countless conversations about the decisions, challenges, and everyday moments leading up to their wedding. We talked about eating enough, drinking water, managing stress, creating balance, and recognizing when it was time to pause.
Sometimes the work was as simple as learning how to open the refrigerator and put together a nourishing meal without needing a recipe or searching Pinterest.
That might not sound like wedding preparation, but it was.
While the vendors brought their beautiful day to life, I remembered all the conversations that led to it. I was now seeing those decisions in front of me. I watched the dance we had discussed. I saw them enjoy their meal. The plans we had talked about during our sessions were no longer plans. They were living them.
This is why I love working with couples 12 to 18 months before their wedding. It gives us time to work on the habits they want running smoothly before wedding planning becomes even busier.
Maybe that means creating a better work-life balance. Maybe it is learning how to regulate your nervous system, communicate what you need, or make a meal without overthinking it.
These habits are not glamorous, and most of them will never appear in a wedding photo.
But they create the foundation that can help you feel energized, supported, and present when the day finally arrives.
Watching this couple enjoy their wedding reminded me that the habits are not simply the background to the joy. They help give that joy somewhere to land.
The vendors helped bring their wedding to life. My role was to support the people preparing to live it.
Maybe I really am a wedding doula.
